What NovelQuill is
NovelQuill writes long fiction with you, not for you. You bring the idea — a premise, a cast, a few notes — and choose how to begin: a book written chapter by chapter, a whole book in one go, a short story, or a manuscript you already have. The AI drafts; you read, steer, rewrite, add scenes and edit by hand. Every AI passage is a proposal until you add it to the chapter, and nothing on the page is ever changed without you.
There is no account and no sign-in. Your library lives on your device.
Getting started
- Open the Create tab and choose Book, Short story or Import manuscript.
- Give it a premise (a sentence is plenty), pick up to five genres, name a character or two, and choose the language and a creativity level — Standard, Creative or Genius.
- For a book, choose chapter by chapter (you plan each chapter, the AI drafts it) or whole book. Long drafts are written on our server; you can leave the app and we will notify you when it is ready, if you allow notifications.
- Read the draft in the workspace. Tap Continue writing to have the next passage drafted, or long-press any paragraph to rewrite, expand, add a scene, edit or share it.
Common questions
What does NovelQuill Pro include, and what is free?
Browsing, reading any story you have, the setup screens and Settings are free. Writing with AI, editing by hand, creating a story, importing a manuscript, Listen, Export, sharing passages and front covers need an active Pro subscription — weekly, monthly or yearly, with a 3-day free trial on the yearly plan when available. The price and period are always shown before you buy.
The story is drifting — a character changed, or a fact got contradicted.
Open the story's Story settings (••• → Story settings) and add the fact to Characters & plot notes. Those notes travel with every request from then on, so new text is written around them. Existing text is never rewritten by a note; use Rewrite this on the paragraph that is wrong.
I don't like the passage it just wrote.
If it is still a proposal, tap Discard. If it is already in the chapter, long-press the paragraph and choose Rewrite this, Expand, Edit text or Delete paragraph. Deleting shows an Undo banner.
It wrote something harmful or inappropriate.
Long-press the paragraph and choose Report this passage, or use Settings → Help & support → Report a passage. A person reviews every report. Reports help us tighten the safety limits.
Can I bring in my own manuscript?
Yes. Create → Import manuscript, then pick a DOCX, PDF, RTF, Markdown or text file, or paste your text. NovelQuill finds the chapter breaks and keeps your words exactly as written. You can rename or join chapters afterwards.
Can I reuse characters in another story?
Yes. Characters you create are saved to your character library automatically. When adding characters to another story, tap Add from library.
How do I get my story out of the app?
Open a story and choose Export:
| Format | Good for |
|---|---|
| EPUB | Kindle (Send to Kindle), Apple Books and other e-readers |
| A typeset 6 × 9 in book with title page, contents and running heads — print-ready | |
| Word (.docx) | Word, Pages, Google Docs, editors and agents |
| Plain text | Everything else |
You can include the front cover and an About-the-Author page from Settings → Author profile. Files are complete, unwatermarked, and made on your device.
How do I add a front cover?
In the workspace, tap Add cover (or ••• → Front cover once one exists). Describe the art direction, and NovelQuill creates artwork on the server; it is applied only when you tap Use this cover. Title and author are typeset over it automatically.
Can I listen to my story?
Yes — ••• → Listen. It reads aloud using the speech voices built into your device, with a different voice per character. If a voice sounds robotic, pick another in the voice cast; you can download higher-quality voices in your device's Accessibility settings under Spoken Content. On iPhone, playback controls appear on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island.
Does it work offline?
Reading, editing by hand, importing, the Codex and Export work with no connection. Writing with AI and front covers need one, because the models run on a server rather than on your device.
Are my stories used to train an AI?
No. We do not train on your writing and we keep no copy of your library. To draft, the relevant text is sent to our service and on to the AI provider; long drafts are held on our server for up to 30 days so your device can collect them, then deleted. The Privacy Policy sets out exactly what is sent and kept.
Will my stories sync between my iPhone, iPad and Mac?
Not at present. Each device keeps its own library. Use Export to move a story across.
What devices does NovelQuill run on?
| Device | Requires |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iOS 18 or later |
| iPad | iPadOS 18 or later |
| Mac | macOS 15 or later |
Subscription help
How do I cancel?
Subscriptions are billed by Apple, so they are cancelled through Apple. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and choose NovelQuill. On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name, then Account Settings. Inside NovelQuill: Settings → Account → Manage subscription. You keep access until the end of the period you paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
I paid, but the app still says I'm not subscribed.
Open Settings inside NovelQuill and tap Restore purchase. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it with. If it still does not appear, email us with the date of purchase and we will look into it.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not by us. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something in the app went wrong, tell us too — we would rather fix it.
Notifications
NovelQuill asks once whether you want notifications. If you allow them, you get a message when a draft written on the server is ready, and a reminder if you have been away from your story for a week. Turn them on or off in Settings → Notifications; off deletes your push token from our server.
Accessibility
- Dynamic Type is supported throughout, up to the largest accessibility sizes.
- VoiceOver labels every control; a paragraph's actions are reachable as "Passage actions".
- Reduce Motion is honoured — every animated element has a still fallback.
- Dark mode is a designed palette, not an inverted one.
If something is hard to use with an assistive technology, please tell us. We treat that as a bug.
Something's not working
A draft is stuck on "Writing…" or failed.
Drafts are written on our server and resume on their own after a relaunch. If one failed, the progress screen offers Retry. If it has been more than a few minutes with no change, check your connection and reopen the app; if it is still stuck, email us the story's title and the time.
I tapped Continue writing and nothing happened.
Check that you have a working internet connection and an active subscription, then try again. If the app says it cannot reach the writing service, that is usually temporary. Your story is safe on your device either way.
A story is missing.
Deleting a story is undoable straight afterwards. If a story has genuinely vanished, email us before reinstalling the app: reinstalling removes local data and we cannot recover it.
Sending a useful bug report
Settings → Help & support → Report a bug opens a mail with the app version and OS filled in. Add what you did, what you expected, and what happened. A screenshot or screen recording helps more than anything.
